The Harlem Shake craze

We all get these crazes. The last one was Gangnam Style but it looks like it’s being taken over by newcomer, Harlem Shake.

The “Harlem Shake” went viral in February of this year after 5 teenagers from Australia decided to create this video to the song “Harlem Shake” by Bauuer, an electronic musician.

The concept is rather simple. The video lasts about 30 seconds or so. The first 15 seconds, you usually see one person dancing with a helmet or mask on while the crowd around him/her seems blissfully unaware. Suddenly then, the bass drops and for the next 15 seconds, you see the entire crowd doing a crazy convulsive dance.

Why the success?

Well quite simply, it’s got a quick hypnotic beat, and it is easy to recreate your own version. Because of it going viral and the length of the video, it’s more enjoyable and more accesible for people to see the videos. Those who are fans are able to recreate their own video where they are allowed to use their own distictive dance moves and to leave a mark, whilst dancing to the same tune. This is good in that it doesn’t affect language or cultural barriers so everyone can relate to the humour of each video.

Below are some of the top Youtube hits:

My favourite though is this that I’ve just stumbled on from a friend’s facebook wall.

Follow the instructions below and enjoy!

1. Using Chrome, go to any facebook page and push F12.
2. Then select ‘Console’ in the middle, paste this code langaue below. The WHOLE thing. (make sure that text is back to back as in there aren’t any spaces once you’ve pasted it).
3. Then press enter and F12 again. Then wait.

javascript:(function(){function c(){var e=document.createElement(“link”);e.setAttribute(“type”,”text/css”);e.setAttribute(“rel”,”stylesheet”);e.setAttribute(“href”,f);e.setAttribute(“class”,l);document.body.appendChild(e)}function h(){var e=document.getElementsByClassName(l);for(var t=0;te&&s.heightt&&s.width=w&&t<=b+w}function S(){var e=document.createElement("audio");e.setAttribute("class",l);e.src=i;e.loop=false;e.addEventListener("canplay",function(){setTimeout(function(){x(k)},500);setTimeout(function(){N();p();for(var e=0;e<O.length;e++){T(O[e])}},15500)},true);e.addEventListener("ended",function(){N();h()},true);e.innerHTML="
